Lucknow : Congress party activists were baton-charged and several detained Monday after they tried to force their way through police barricades while taking out a march to press for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) enquiry into a chief medical officer’s (CMO) murder.
Holding candles, a large number of Congress activists, including state unit chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi, assembled at the Shaheed Smarak and started proceeding towards the Red Cross building that houses the office of the CMO and other health officials.
The activists were stopped near the Gandhi Bhawan, a short distance away, following which they started forcing their way through several barricades put up in the area.
Police then carried out a baton-charge and also used water canons to disperse the activists.
“We have been targeted at the behest of the chief minister…She (Mayawati) wants to adopt every harsh measure to gag voices against her,” Joshi told reporters.
“We were unnecessarily targeted by the police as no one amongst us indulged in any kind of violence while carrying out the march to press for the demand of CBI enquiry into the CMO’s murder case,” she added.
CMO (family welfare) B.P. Singh was gunned down as he left his for routine morning walk in the posh Gomti Nagar area here April 2.
