German FM doubts Qadhafi’s ceasefire pledge

By IRNA,

Berlin : German Foreign Minister Gudio Westerwelle on Monday expressed doubts whether Libyan dictator Moammar Qadhafi would really adhere to his declaration on accepting an African Union-brokered peace plan which calls for an immediate ceasefire.

The German Press Agency dpa quoted Westerwelle as saying in Berlin that he
was sceptical about Qadhafi’s apparent readiness to accept a truce.

He pointed out that the Libyan ruler had made similar declarations before but did not follow up on them with concrete actions.

The minister is to travel to the Qatari capital Doha on Wednesday to attend a meeting of the Libyan contact group which is to discuss ways for securing a political solution for the conflict in the North African country.

Meanwhile, German foreign ministry spokesman Andreas Peschke reiterated Qadhafi could not be part of Libya’s political future.

‘We see for Libya only a good future without Qadhafi,’ the German diplomat told media representatives in the German capital.

Peschke urged Qadhafi to comply with UN 1973 resolution demands for an immediate ceasefire in his country and ‘open the way for a political solution.’

He made clear there could ‘only be a political and no military solution.’

Peschke also pointed out that there has been no UN request yet for a European Union-led humanitarian military mission in Libya.
