Greenpeace criticises India-Kazakh nuclear deal

By IANS,

New Delhi : Environment organisation Greenpeace Tuesday criticised India for preparing to sign an agreement on civil nuclear cooperation with Kazakhstan during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to the Central Asian country.

“It surprises me that the obvious fact that nuclear technology is inherently dangerous and risky is being ignored by our leaders. The government is not even waiting to finish the safety audit of the current reactors, let alone a holistic assessment of the proposed reactors to begin talks with other countries at the highest level,” said Karuna Raina, nuclear and energy campaigner- Greenpeace India.

“While a majority of the countries are reviewing their plans at a macro level, we are going ahead with signing deals and acquiring uranium mines in other countries,” she said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday left for China to attend the 3rd BRICS (Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa) summit.

During his five-day two-nation tour, he will also visit Kazakhstan to sign at least six agreements including an inter-governmental agreement on civil nuclear cooperation.
