Court upholds MCD official’s jail term for graft

By IANS,

New Delhi : The Delhi High Court has upheld the conviction of a former Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) official for demanding Rs.1,500 as a bribe 16 years ago.

Justice Rajiv Shakdher upheld the two-and-a-half year jail term given by a trial court to R.P.S. Yadav.

“I am of the opinion that the judgement of the trial court convicting the appellant has to be sustained,” the judge said and cancelled Yadav’s bail. The court ordered police to take Yadav into custody immediately.

“Yadav had demanded Rs.1,500 as bribe from the complainant to issue a licence for running a tailoring shop in New Seemapuri area in 1995,” said the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The trial court had in January 2002 acquitted the co-accused, a peon, due to lack of evidence.
