London protest demands inquiry into black death in police custody

By IRNA,

London : Hundreds of people marched through London Saturday, calling for a public inquiry into the death of former reggae singer Smiley Culture, while he was in police custody.

Culture, aged 40, whose real name is David Emmanuel, died from a stab wound during a drugs raid by the police at his home in Warlingham, south of London, last month.

His family have accused the police of failing to explain the death of the singer, after being told he stabbed himself while making a cup of tea, despite officers still being present in his home at the time.

The protest march by more than 600 to Scotland Yard was led by his family and friends and passed the British parliament, which is currently in recess for the Easter period.

His nephew Merlin Emmanuel, who grew up with the singer, questioned why he was allowed by police to go into the kitchen to make tea, saying that it “beggars belief.”

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has already launched an investigation into the death, while there have also been angry scene when the incident was raid at a Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA) meeting.
