New Delhi : India went down tamely to sixth seeded China 0-3 in the Junior Davis Cup in the Asia-Oceania final qualifying at Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA) here Tuesday.
India, who went down 1-2 to Chinese Taipei in the first match of the round robin Monday, will now fight to avoid relegation.
The hosts needed to beat China and Sri Lanka to qualify for the World Group. Two teams from each of the four group will make the cut.
India, who are placed third in group D, now play bottom placed Sri Lanka Wednesday to stay in the Asia-Oceania group.
A lot was expected from India’s top player Sheikh Abdullah after No.2 Fatehdeep Singh went down to Ze-Yu Li 4-6, 3-6.
Abdullah, who won India the winning point against Chinese Taipei, hung in against Si-Yu Liu till the first six games of the match before being broken in the seventh after he hit a backhand down the line wide.
A confident Liu consolidated the break and then broke Abdullah to go up a set.
A dispirited Abdullah committed series of errors in the second set and simply went though the motions. Liu ran through the set to close the match 3-6, 0-6 in an hour and 15th minutes.
