Srinagar : Water levels in most rivers in the Kashmir Valley have risen following continuous rains over the last three days, but the weather office here Tuesday discounted possibility of any floods.
The water level in the Jhelum river at Ram Munshi Bagh in Srinagar city Tuesday morning stood at 17 feet, which is two feet below the flood alert level.
“Further heavy rains can result in a flood alert, but we are confident the level would fall down as the weather starts improving,” said an official of the local flood control department here.
Sonam Lotus, director of the local weather office, said the weather is set to improve.
“The western disturbance affecting the weather system in the valley during the last three days has weakened. Light to moderate rain can occur at some places in the valley till tomorrow (Wednesday) morning. The weather will start improving after that,” Lotus said.
The official also said the minimum temperatures had fallen by five to six degrees Celsius from the April average because of the rains and fresh snowfall in the Pir Panchal range in the south and around the Zojila Pass in the north.
