Donetsk (Ukraine) : Ukrainian tycoon Rinat Akhmetov has purchased Britain’s most expensive apartment for over $220 million.
Though the three-storey apartment in the luxury One Hyde Park residential complex was sold for 135.4 million pounds in 2007, the deal has only just been made public, RIA Novosti reports.
The priciest apartment is in the One Hyde Park development in London’s exclusive Knightsbridge.
But the penthouse, which has breathtaking views over Hyde Park and the London skyline, is unlikely to make a dent in Akhmetov’s reported 10 billion-pound fortune.
He owns Donetsk-based holding company System Capital Management (SCM).
“This is SCM’s investment,” said Akhmetov’s spokeswoman Yelena Dovzhenko Tuesday.
The coal miner’s son and father-of-two bought two apartments and had them knocked into one – and now he is planning a 60 million-pound refit of the interior of the three-storey penthouse, Dail Mail reports.
The Ukrainian financial and industrial holding company said in a statement on its website that the purchase was “a portfolio investment”.
Forbes estimated the fortune of Akhmetov, who owns 100 percent of SCM shares, at about $16 billion in 2011.
The previous record for property in Britain was also held by a Ukrainian.
