New Delhi : All the nine nuclear plants in India are safe and the country will never face Japan-like situation as there is a lot of geographical difference between the two countries, Nuclear Energy Corporation of India claimed.

Executive Director of the Nuclear Energy Corporation of India K B Dixit said that the main earthquake belt of Indian territory comprised the north-east area and the upper areas of the Himalayas.

‘Since most of the nuclear plants are about 900 to 1,300 kms away from this earthquake belt, these are fully safe,’ he said Monday at Panchkula in Haryana state, according to pti.

ixit said that the first nuclear plant was set up in India in 1969 and since then it had been working smoothly. Now the corporation has adopted a policy to set up nuclear plants of 700 MW.

In Haryana also, four nuclear plants each of 700 MWs, would be set up at Gorakhpur in Fatehabad District.

The central Government has constituted a high-powered committee to review the safety of nuclear plants in the country. The corporation has also constituted a work force at its own level.

Besides, the International Atomic Energy Agency and WANO were also reviewing the plants, Dixit added.
