New Delhi: India will go in for a new survey for listing Below Poverty Line (BPL) families in the wake of complaints from states about people having been left out, Rural Development Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said Thursday.
Talking to reporters, Deshmukh said that there were complaints regarding exclusion and bogus names finding place in BPL lists.
He said that the new survey to be started from June this year and effort will be made to ensure there were no discrepancies in the list.
The ministry will provide technical inputs for the survey and the results were expected in about a year, he added.
The Supreme Court had Wednesday asked the Planning Commission to explain on what basis it estimated that 36 per cent of the population were BPL when several states including those ruled by the Congress had disputed the figure.
The new BPL survey also assumes significance in the wake of government’s intention to bring a food security bill.
