By IANS,

Islamabad : The rummy club in Karachi, where a massive explosion left at least 15 people dead Thursday night, holds a licence that is over 60 years old.

Rummy, a card game, is played at the club in the old city area.

Fifteen people were killed and 35 injured in the powerful blast in the club.

The daily Dawn said that the rummy club is probably the oldest such club functioning in the city where only members can play under a licence that dates back to 1948.

The club was housed in a three-storeyed building, with each floor designated for players who can play for Rs.500, Rs.1,000 and Rs.100,000 respectively.

On weekdays there are around 500 to 600 visitors and their number exceeds 1,500 on weekends.

An official said the club has a weekly turnover of millions of rupees.

“…from the common man to tycoons, the club is frequented by all,” the official was quoted as saying.
