Global alert likely to trace don Chhota Rajan

By IANS,

Mumbai : Maharashtra Home Minister R.R. Patil Monday said the government would request the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to issue an international alert for tracing don Chhota Rajan suspected to be involved in a journalist’s murder here.

Mumbai Police have named Rajan as the main conspirator in the June 11 murder of city journalist Jyotirmoy Dey.

Patil said the CBI would be requested to issue a red corner notice using the Interpol machinery to trace the don.

He informed the legislative assembly that nine people have so far been arrested in connection with Dey’s killing and police were on the lookout for another three.

He added that a charge sheet against the accused would be filed soon by police.

“Forensic laboratory experts have confirmed that the bullets found in Dey’s body were shot from the gun recovered from the accused,” Patil said, during a discussion on Dey’s killing and the measures taken to protect journalists.

Dey, editor (special investigation) of Mumbai tabloid Mid-Day, was shot dead near his residence in Powai, a northeast suburb.

Police investigations later revealed that the killing was allegedly carried out at the behest of Rajan, believed to be hiding somewhere in South East Asia.

Regarding the proposed law to protect mediapersons, Patil said a cabinet sub-committee, headed by Industries Minister Narayan Rane, appointed by the government last month would submit its report within a month.
