Islamabad : Authorities must abide by their announcement that no power cuts would be resorted to at the beginning and end of fasting during the month of Ramzan, a Pakistani paper said Tuesday, noting that similar promises in the past had proved hollow.
“Mere announcements of no load-shedding during ‘Sehri’ and ‘Iftaar’ will not suffice, and authorities must prove it by not cutting off electricity at these times. Many such assurances made in the past have proved to be false,” an editorial in the Urdu daily Jang said.
“Power cuts throughout the country have already crippled business and economic activity, and if they continue at times of Sehri, Iftaar and ‘Tarawi’ (special night prayers in the first 10 days of Ramzan), they will create a lot of problems for the ‘Rozedaars’,” it added.
On Sunday, there were three to four power cuts during the day despite offices and commercial establishments remaining closed, while electric supply had remained erratic in the night too, the editorial said, adding that such a situation should not occur during Ramzan.
Attacking the authorities for not taking steps to rectify the problems of dangling wires and tottering electric poles, it said these not only caused the power outages, but also imperilled passers-by.
