Petition challenging the appointment of Justice Syed Rafat Alam dismissed

By TCN Staff Reporter,

Lucknow: The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court on Thursday dismissed the petition challenging the appointment of the newly appointed chief justice of Allahabad High Court, Justice Syed Rafat Alam.

The bench comprising Justice Pradeep Kant and Justice Rituraj Awasthi after hearing the arguments of the petitioner dismissed the petition on the grounds that the matter has no merits and is frivolous.

A local lawyer Ashok Pandey had filed a PIL challenging the appointment of Justice Syed Rafat Alam as Chief Justice on the grounds that the chief justice of the high court cannot be a person who has previously served as judge in the same high court.

Justice Rafat Alam has served as judge at the Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court for 15 years with a brief stint at Patna High Court.
