New Delhi: Jamia Urdu, Aligarh has demanded the government of India to accord it the status of national university. A high-level delegation of Jamia Urdu has met Justice MSA Siddiqui, National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) and put the demand before him.
The delegation led by Farhat Ali Khan, chairman, Board of Governor, Jamia Urdu, Aligarh, met NCMEI chief on August 3 in his office and apprised him of the problems of Jamia.

Jamia Urdu is a minority institution and the first distance mode educational institution in the country. Its branches are not only in India but abroad also, said Khan and appealed to chairman to make effort for Jamia to become an Open University.
Jamia Board member Jaseem Mohammed expressed concern at the fact that Urdu has been attached with a particular religion while the fact is that it is not the language of a religion rather it is the language of entire Hindustan. The language played great role in the freedom movement of the country.
Mr Khalil Chaudhury, another member of the Board, demanded status of a national university.
Justice MSA Siddiquie assured the delegation that within the law the commission will offer all its help to Jamia and positive steps will be soon taken address its problems.
Other members of the delegation were: Daulat Ram, vice president of Deyar-e-Adab India, besides Samoon Ali Naqvi, Shahid Pervez, Tahir Hussain and Mohammed Sabir.
