Lucknow : Youth Congress activists were baton-charged as they turned violent after police prevented them from marching towards the state assembly here while demonstrating against the Mayawati-led Uttar Pradesh government, officials said.
Accusing the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) of indulging in corrupt practices and not making sincere efforts for restoring law and order in the state, the Congress activists hit the streets and started marching towards the assembly complex.
After police restrained them in the nearby Hussainganj area, the Congress activists turned violent and resorted heavy brick batting, police said. Water canons were used and the demonstrators were baton-charge to disperse them.
Police claimed no one was seriously injured in the incident, but Youth Congress leader Amit Tyagi alleged several of activists were injured in the police action.
“We were targeted unnecessarily… We would continue to fight against the state government,” he added.
