Saddened by London violence: Dalai Lama

By IANS,

New Delhi : Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama Wednesday said he was saddened by the riots in London, adding that he may have expected such a situation in Pakistan or Bangladesh, but not Britain.

“I am saddened by the violence in London. I consider UK as a peaceful country, a law abiding nation. I could have expected such a thing to happen in, say, Karachi (Pakistan) or Bangladesh,” Dalai Lama said at a conference here.

The riots erupted last week after police shot dead 29-year-old Mark Duggan, who in his last message to his girlfriend said: “The Feds are following me.”

London was largely peaceful Wednesday after witnessing over four days of violence as the unrest spread to other British cities where rioters stalked the streets, looted stores and burnt buildings.
