Kolkata : The death count in floods in West Bengal rose to 21 with six more people perishing in the last 24 hours, an official said Monday.
About 1.9 million people across 14 districts have been affected in the deluge triggered by heavy torrential rains.
“The number of deaths have gone up to 21,” said Chief Secretary Samar Ghosh after a meeting at the state secretariat here.
Altogether 135,000 houses spread over 195 blocks and 57 municipalities have been fully or partly damaged.
With the rains subsiding, the discharge of water from the various dams have gone down, said an official.
Udaynarayanpur and Amta in Howrah district and Khanakul in Hooghly district are the worst affected blocks.
