Arrested Bengal ex-minister to fast against ‘vindictive’ government

By IANS,

Kolkata : Former Left Front minister Sushanto Ghosh, arrested after skeletons were found near his house in Midnapore, Wednesday said he would sit on an indefinite fast while in CID custody to protest the “vindictive attitude” of the Trinamool Congress-led government.

A Midnapore court Wednesday extended the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) custody of Ghosh by four days.

“I will sit for indefinite fast while in custody against the vindictive attitude of the Trinamool Congress led state government. I am being falsely implicated,” said Ghosh.

“I was interrogated for 30 long hours, and when I became ill I was admitted to SSKM hospital. Right now also I am not well,” said Ghosh.

The lawmaker had to Wednesday face the ire of protesters who surrounded his car and shouted slogans as police had a harrowing time getting the crowd out of way of the convoy.

Ghosh faced a similar protest on his first hearing of the case Aug 11 when his anticipatory bail was cancelled and he was sent to seven day CID custody.

Ghosh was admitted to state-run SSKM hospital Aug 13 after he complained of discomfort. He was shifted to the ICU after reports showed he had high blood pressure. He was discharged Wednesday following CID’s plea as his custody period expired Wednesday.

It is alleged that on Sep 22, 2002, Ajay Acharya and some other members of the Trinamool Congress were attacked by 40 armed people allegedly belonging to the CPI-M.

Sushanta Ghosh was one of the 40 people named in the first information report (FIR) filed after the incident nine years back.

Seven of the Trinamool Congress members were brutally killed, the FIR said.
