Chandigarh : Increased discharge of water from dams on the Beas and Sutlej rivers has led to some flooding in low-lying areas in Punjab, an official spokesman said here Sunday.
He said that some flooding was reported from low-lying areas downstream of Beas river after Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) released water from the Pong Dam in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh Saturday.
“Beas and Satluj rivers in Punjab witnessed increased discharge from Pong Dam, Naushera Mirthal and Dhilwan on Beas and Harike and Hussainiwala on Sutlej river,” the spokesman said.
“From the Pong Dam, 64,477 cusecs of water was discharged against the inflow of 76,674 cusecs. Sutlej also witnessed the discharge of 67,746 cusecs of water from Harike and 51,537 cusecs from Hussainiwala,” he added.
The water level in Pong Dam was 1,387.48 feet Sunday against its maximum capacity of 1,390 feet. Last year, on this day, the level was 1,370.28 feet.
“Due to continuous heavy rainfall in the state, the water level in Bhakra Dam has been increasing. The water level at Bhakra Dam today (Sunday) touched 1,667.35 feet water mark whereas its capacity is 1,680 feet,” he said.
The water level at Ranjit Sagar Dam on river Ravi near Pathankot has touched 518.69 metres against a capacity of 520.94 metres.
