Rs.5 lakh each for Karnal blast victims’ kin

Chandigarh : The Haryana government Tuesday announced a compensation of Rs.5 lakh to the families of each of the five people who were killed in a blast in a cracker factory in Karnal district Monday evening.

Minister of State for Labour and Employment Shiv Charan Lal Sharma, who visited the blast site in Mughal Majra village, 10 km from Karnal town, asked officials to submit a report on the cause of the blast.

Five people, including two women, lost their lives and about 15 others were seriously injured in the blast. All the dead belonged to Nalanda area of Bihar.

An official spokesman said here that police have registered a case against the owner of the factory and his four sons.

“The labourers inside the factory were preparing material for making crackers. Suddenly, a loud blast occurred due to a short circuit and the factory caught fire. Five people were killed on the spot and about 15 were seriously injured. The blast could be heard several kilometres away,” the spokesman said.

The factory had been set up in 2003.
