BJP gives notice for Lokpal debate with voting

By IANS,

New Delhi : Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded a discussion on the various versions of the anti-graft Lokpal bill under rules that entail voting.

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj told reporters that notices have been submitted in the house for having a discussion under rule 184, which entails voting, and in Rajya Sabha under rule 167 with the same provision.

“Notice for a discussion under rule 184 has been given in Lok Sabha, and in Rajya Sabha, the notice has been given for debate under rule 167,” Sushma Swaraj said.

“We would like the debate to start on Saturday,” Sushma Swaraj said.

The leader of opposition also accused the government of taking a casual approach towards the discussion.

“We got a message at 2.10 (p.m.) that the debate on Sandeep Dikshit’s (East Delhi MP) Lokpal bill will start at 2.15 (p.m.), we went to the speaker and asked how this can be done,” she said.

“Such a casual approach to something so important… what message do they want to give,” she asked.

“Either the discussion should be under a rule which entails voting or the government should give a statement,” she said.

The debate, which was supposed to take place Friday, was deferred to Saturday after differences cropped up as to which rule the discussion should be held under.
