India not a majoritarian regime: Chidambaram

By IANS,

New Delhi: Home Minister P. Chidambaram Wednesday said India is not a majoritarian regime and affirmed the government’s commitment to protecting minorities.

Replying to supplementaries to a question in the Rajya Sabha amid protests from the Bharatiya Janata Party against him, Chidambaram said detailed guidelines were laid down by the central government in 2008 on communal harmony.

“The government has always been concerned about minorities…the minorities are entitled to protection,” Chidambaram said.

“We are not a majoritarian regime.”

He sought the support of state governments in implementing those guidelines.

Asked about action against police officers responsible for wrongful detention of members of minorities and their torture, Chidambaram said it is not correct to blame police but added that in some cases, which come to notice, a magisterial probe has been ordered.
