GSM operators add 6.7 million new users in November

New Delhi : India’s GSM mobile phone base grew by a marginal 1.1 percent in November 2011 adding 6.7 million new subscribers.

Data furnished by Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) Wednesday showed that subscriber base rose to 632.1 million in November from 625.4 million the previous month.

Idea Cellular’s subscription grew by 32.6 percent in the period under review. It added 2.2 million new subscribers taking its total subscriber base to 104 million.

Idea was followed by Uninor which added 1.9 million subscribers.

However, Aircel had the highest subscription growth rate of 37.7 percent with 0.7 million subscribers, taking its total subscribe to 61 million.

Other operators Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and state-owned BSNL reported stagnant net subscription rates by adding 1.0 million, 0.9 million and 0.6 million respectively.

COAI said new operators continued to struggle to gain market share. Videocon reported a decline of 0.6 million in its subscriber base during the last month.

Net subscription addition of S Tel, Loop Mobile also slumped by 51.3 percent and 9 percent respectively.
