Islamabad : A top official has “just made history” by re-appointing himself for three more years, a Pakistani daily said Thursday, terming this “preposterous”.
Sadat Anwar Kambrani, chairman of the Balochistan Development Authority, has “just made history and re-appointed himself for a further three years”, an editorial in the News International said.
“A precedent has been set, and if allowed to stand, it has serious implications countrywide.”
Kambrani re-appointed himself on the ground that “he was not adequately reimbursed of the perks and privileges he was due when he was suspended, then reinstated, and that his entitlement is best fulfilled by extending his tenure”.
“This is preposterous,” said the editorial.
It added: “Allowing anybody, whatever their rank, to sign their own appointment extension in government service is so far beyond the bounds of standard operating procedures and accepted protocols that it is truly in the realm of Wonderland.”
If one senior civil servant is allowed to get away with it, then why not others, the editorial wondered.
It went on to say that Kambrani had been compensated with payment of his salary in full for the period he was suspended.
“Yet…Kambrani is still firmly rooted in his seat,” it said, adding: “This matter needs swift and decisive resolution before others jump on the bandwagon.”
