Decline in Maoist violence, claims government

New Delhi : The government Friday said Maoist violence in the central and eastern parts of the country has declined this year as compared to 2010.

?Naxal (Maoist) violence has declined as compared to the corresponding period last year. In the year 2011 (till November) 1,554 Naxal incidents took place, causing 542 deaths as compared to 2006 incidents with 932 deaths during the corresponding period of 2010,? according to a home ministry spokesperson.

In compiling the year-end review of the ministry, the spokesperson said over Rs.132 crore was allocated to nine Maoist-affected states under the Security Related Expenditure (SRE) in 2011.

Besides, Rs.167.76 crore was released to the affected states as advance and Rs.87.41 crore as reimbursement to five of them.

Under the new scheme for fortifying police stations, a total amount of Rs.120 crore was released to the states during 2011 for the construction of 400 police stations.
