Lokpal bill has many infirmities, says BJP

By IANS,

New Delhi : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Friday said that the Lokpal bill introduced in the Lok Sabha was full of “infirmities” and indicated the party would move amendments during discussion on the legislation in parliament next week.

Senior BJP leaders met here to discuss the party’s response to the bill introduced by the government Thursday. Those present included party veteran L.K. Advani, party president Nitin Gadkari, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and her Rajya Sabha counterpart Arun Jaitley.

Party leader Ananth Kumar said the Bill presented in parliament “is full of infirmities – both legal and constitutional”.

BJP does not want a “sarkari (government) Lokpal Bill” but an “effective Lokpal bill,” he said.

He said the party will take all necessary steps during the parliament session Dec 27-29 to take its objections to the logical conclusion.

He said the government bill infringes on the federal structure of the country and had provisions which were unconstitutional.

Party leaders said on condition of anonymity that the bill had provisions which are likely to be struck down by courts.

The core group also discussed the party’s preparations in the assembly polls early next year.
