Bangladeshi PM returns home

Dhaka : Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina returned home this afternoon ending her five-day official visit to the United Kingdom (UK).

An Emirates flight carrying the Prime Minister and members of her entourage landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 3.15 pm.

Deputy Leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, Finance Minister A M A Muhith, Agriculture Minister Begum Matia Chowdhury, LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Syed Ashraful Islam, Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister G M Quader, Health Minister Prof Dr A F M Ruhal Haque, Chief Whip Vice-Principal Abdus Shaheed, Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad, Adviser to the Prime Minister H T Imam, Special Assistant to Prime Minister Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, Dean of the diplomatic corps, British high commissioner Stephen Evans, cabinet secretary, chiefs of the three services and high civil and military officials received the
Prime Minister at the airport.

During her London tour, the Prime Minister held official talks with her British counterpart David Cameron on January 27 when the two leaders discussed various issues of bilateral interest and the UK support for the country’s development.

Sheikh Rehana, younger daughter of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni, Ambassador-At-Large M Ziauddin and Bangladesh High Commissioner to the UK Dr M Sayeedur Rahman Khan were present during the talks.

Sheikh Hasina also addressed the Oxford Union Society on “World Peace” and joined a programme at the House of Commons.

Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was conferred the Global Diversity Award for her priceless contribution to a number of crucial areas of public and private sectors to promote human life.

Speaker of the British Parliament John Bercow handed over the award to her at a reception on January 27 at the House of Commons.

Besides, Deputy Prime Minister of UK Nick Clegg, leader of the Labour Party ED Miliband, Energy and Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne, Minister of State for International Development Alan Duncan, former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Foreign Secretary William Hague, Home Secretary Theresa May, Deputy Speaker Lindsay Hyle, Shadow Minister for Public Health Ms Dianne Abott and Labour Party MP and Shadow Minister for DFID Ms Roshnara Ali called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her visit when they discussed a wide range of issues of common interest.

Secretary General of International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Efthimios Mitropoulos also called on her at her hotel suite.

Chairman of Standing Committee of Human Rights of House of Lords Lord Abury, Director Asia chapter of Amnesty International Abbas Faiz and Director HR Caucus, New York Prague Adams also paid a courtesy called on her at her hotel suite on Saturday.

Apart from official programmes, Sheikh Hasina, also the President of Bangladesh Awami League, joined the council session of UK chapter of her party as the chief guest. She was accorded a reception by the expatriate Bangladeshis living in different European countries.

Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni, Mayor of Sylhet city Badaruddin Ahmed Kamran, Ambassador-At-Large M Ziauddin, Principal Secretary M A Karim and Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad, among others, accompanied the Prime Minister during the visit.
