Sana’a : The winds of change sweeping the Arab world Thursday saw more than 20,000 Yemenis take to the streets here demanding the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
The protesters shouted slogans such as “people want the regime to fall, people want Saleh to go,” Xinhua reported. The protesters massed outside Sana’a University.
“People want freedom, people want to end the dictatorship,” said one of the demonstrators.
President Saleh, who has ruled the country since 1978, has said he will not seek another term in office and Wednesday urged the opposition to join a national unity alliance.
The 64-year-old Saleh’s term in office is set to expire in 2013.
Thursday’s march follows the ouster of Tunisian president Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali Jan 14 after unprecedented mass protests and similar demonstrations now in Cairo seeking the exit of President Hosni Mubarak.
