Orissa lawmaker held for criminal activities

By IANS,

Bhubaneswar : A Congress legislator was arrested Tuesday in Orissa for criminal activities including terrorising people and attacking police, an official said.

Police arrested Ramesh Jena from Brahmagiri area of Puri district, Police Commissioner B.K. Sharma told IANS.

Jena is a member of the state assembly from the Sanakhemundi assembly constituency in the southern Ganjam district. He is currently out on conditional bail in a murder case.

Protesting the arrest, Jena’s supporters blocked roads and burnt tyres at Berhampur, a leading town in Ganjam district.

“Jena is the main accused in an incident that took place in an apartment at Bhubaneswar Feb 1 when criminals were apprehended,” Sharma said.

Police had raided the flat of Jena located in the heart of the city that day and arrested eight criminals who even opened fire on the police team. Jena said the action against him was politically motivated.
