Kolkata: In the wake of the ongoing turmoil in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee Saturday said only discussions could solve the issue and violence would not solve any problem.
“I would say to the people who are spearheading the movement in the hills that they should come for talks as political discussions can only solve the problem. There are incidents of violence. But violence cannot solve any problem. We want discussions to solve the problem,” said Bhattacharjee while addressing a programme here.
The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM), which is spearheading a movement for a separate Gorkhaland state, called for an indefinite shutdown in Darjeeling hills and Dooars, the foothills, to protest the killing of two of its supporters in police firing Feb 8. One woman supporter of the party, who was injured in the firing, died Saturday, taking the toll to three.
The central government-appointed interlocutor Vijay Madan visited Darjeeling hills to assess the situation Saturday, day four of the indefinite shutdown.
