Kuala Lumpur : The Indian community does not need Hindraf, the banned Hindu Rights Action Force, because the government has been looking after its interests, Najib Tun Razak said on Friday.
The Prime Minister said the Indian community should be with Barisan Nasional which took seriously the future well-being of every race in the country.
“We have taken action on the question of Indian community interests, meaning that they don’t need Hindraf, they only need BN,” he told reporters after chairing an Umno supreme council meeting here.
Commenting on the reported possibility of Hindraf creating trouble at a rally held without police permission this Sunday, Najib said he wanted the authorities to take appropriate action under the law so that the banned organisation did not re-emerge.
Asked on the silence of PAS leaders on the issue of pluralism, Najib said that they should state their stand.
He noted that only the PAS Ulama Council head Harun Taib had expressed his views on the subject.
Najib had said recently that pluralism which some quarters were trying to push should be curbed because it contradicted the beliefs of Muslims in the country.
Harun himself rejected pluralism saying it was wrong to equate Islam with other religions.
On the lessons to be learned from the use of the Internet to move the revolution in Egypt, Najib said the first thing to understand was not to take lightly the voice of the younger generation and their dissatisfaction.
He said that dissatisfaction was already burning within the people, especially the younger generation who had the energy to demand change.
Najib said what happened in Egypt might be called a “Facebook revolution” where people used the Internet to move opposition against a dictator.
