Cuba suspends mail service to US

By IANS/EFE,

Havana : The Cuban postal service has suspended mail deliveries to the US until further notice after large amounts of US-bound mail using airlines of other countries returned to Cuba, according to a statement.

Correos de Cuba “will not be able to continue accepting any type of dispatch destined for the US”, the statement read.

Havana is obliged to use third-country airlines because of the US economic embargo against the island, it said.

The air carriers are returning the mail undelivered as a result of “new modifications” US authorities have made to security procedures, Correos de Cuba said.

The US broke diplomatic relations with Cuba in 1961 and direct mail service between the two countries ended in 1963, a year after Washington imposed a broad economic embargo on the island.

A US delegation had travelled to Havana in September 2009 to begin talks on resuming direct postal links.

Around 25 percent of all international mail from Cuba goes to the US, home to several millions of Cuban exiles.
