Former BJP minister to be prosecuted in land scam

By IANS,

Bangalore: Karnataka Governor H. R. Bhardwaj Wednesday sanctioned the prosecution of former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) minister Katta Sumbramanya Naidu in a land scam.

Naidu is alleged to have received Rs.85 crores bribe for favouring an IT firm, Itasca Software, in allotment of 325 acres of land near Bangalore when he was the industry minister in 2007 in the Janata Dal(Secular)-BJP coalition government.

He resigned in December 2010 when the Lokayukta (ombudsman) filed a complaint with the police against him, his son Katta Jagadish Naidu, a Bangalore corporator, and several others.

The ombudsman sought the governor’s permission July 4 to proceed with filing a chargesheet. The permission was necessary as the scam took place when Naidu was minister and at present he is an assembly member.

The chargesheet is likely to be filed Thursday, Lokayukta sources said.

The Lokayukta had arrested Katta Jagadish in October 2010 on charges of trying to influence a witness. He is on bail now.
