Ghaziabad : Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav was Thursday detained and later released in Ghaziabad while he was on his way to Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, police said.

Yadav was detained around 9.30 a.m. while he was on his way to visit Asatalpur village in Moradabad. “He was detained in view of the Section 144 currently imposed in Ghaziabad,” a police officer said, referring to the ban on any gathering of five or more people in the area.

Administration officials reached the spot and prevented Yadav and his party workers from going further. He was brought to a guest house from where he was sent back to Delhi around 11.45 a.m.

Talking to media, Yadav said he was going to the place in a peaceful manner “but still it was unacceptable to the government”. “Chief Minister Mayawati is a dictator and the public is oppressed.”
