Pranab defends Chidambaram

By IANS,

New Delhi : Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Friday defended Home Minister P. Chidambaram, criticised for not keeping records of his meetings with jailed former telecom minister A. Raja, saying it was not possible for a minister to keep record of all his meetings.

“One point I would like to make it quite clear. I am seeing in the newspapers and in the media that the meeting between Chidambaram and Raja were not recorded,” Mukherjee told reporters here.

“Now as finance minister we have to meet ministers almost daily. Every day some ministers come. It is not possible to keep a record of the meetings or minutes of meeting because there is no need.”

In its presentation Thursday to the Joint Parliamentary Committee, the department of economic affairs noted that the meeting between Chidambaram and Raja on the 2G pricing took place May 29, 2008.

Chidambaram was the finance minister at the time. However it was reported that no records of the meeting were kept.
