Afghan militants release 24 abducted workers

By IANS,

Kabul : Suspected Taliban militants who abducted 28 workers engaged in landmine removal operations in Afghanistan last week set free 24 of them Monday, officials said. Four workers were found dead Saturday.

The militants had abducted the workers from Farah province, 700 km west of Kabul, Wednesday, Xinhua reported.

“The abductors set free 24 de-miners today in Dillaram district,” said Naqibullah Farahi, spokesman for the provincial administration.

Without blaming any group for the abduction, he said all the workers were released without any ransom being paid. Mediation by local elders had helped in their release.

Farah province police chief Syed Mohammed Roshandil, however, accused the Taliban of being involved in the abduction.
