Police officer suspended, booked for extortion

Panaji: A police sub-inspector in Goa has been suspended after the mother of a drowning tragedy survivor complained that he had extorted money from her after threatening to implicate her in the case, police said Tuesday.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Umesh Gaonkar told IANS that sub-inspector Prasanna Bhagat attached to the Cuncolim police station, 45 km from here, was suspended Monday and an extortion complaint booked against him.

“Four people from a picnicking group of nine had died at the Cabo de Rama beach (70 km from here),” Gaonkar said.

“The mother of one of the survivors complained that Bhagat had threatened to implicate them in the drowning case if they failed to shell out Rs.25,000,” he added.
