Chidambaram in Mumbai, visits blast sites

Mumbai : Barely five hours after the Mumbai blasts, Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram rushed to the city here around midnight Wednesday-Thursday for a spot assessment of the triple blasts which left 21 dead and 141 injured.

He was accompanied by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and newly-appointed MoS from Mumbai, Milind Deora, and other high-ranking home department and police officials.

A grim-looking Chidambaram was briefed in detail about the blasts, its impact and the casualties by officials at the site visit at Opera House, shortly after midnight.

Earlier, the centre rushed a 6-member National Investigation Agency team to assist Mumbai and Maharashtra police in the investigations into the Mumbai triple blasts.

The NIA team is in addition to a 7-member team already present in the country’s commercial capital.

Besides, a 7-member team of Central Forensics Sciences Lab from New Delhi and a 5-member team of CFSL from Hyderabad also arrived in Mumbai late tonight.

Police and home ministry officials declined to confirm or deny the involvement of terror outfits like Indian Mujahiddeen or Lashkar-E-Taiba, which been instrumental in some past terror attacks in the city and state.
