Five killed in blast at Wali Karzai memorial service

Kabul : Five people were killed and 15 injured Thursday in a suicide bombing attack in Kandahar city when people had gathered to pay homage to the Afghan president’s half-brother who was shot dead by his guard.

“A suicide bomber blew himself up inside Sara mosque where people gathered to pay homage and pray for the departed soul of Ahmad Wali Karzai, younger brother of President Hamid Karzai. As a result, five civilians were killed and 15 others sustained injuries,” the Kandahar provincial administration said in a statement.

Ahmad Wali Karzai, who headed the Kandahar Provincial Council, was assassinated at his home Tuesday, reported Xinhua.

Mawlawi Hekmatullah Hekmat, the head of religious council of Kandahar province, was among those killed in the mosque blast Thursday, it said.

Several government officials also attended the memorial service at the mosque.
