Lucknow: Stung by a spate of rapes, murders and other heinous crimes across Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Mayawati Friday took top officials to task, issuing a stern warning to curb the crimes or face action. She directed that FIRs related to crimes against women are lodged without delay and such cases solved within 10 days.
Also taking note of the Mumbai serial blasts, she asked security officials to remain vigilant round the clock so as to avert such incidents in the state.
She also urged top officials to ensure good coordination with central intelligence agencies to ensure effective exchange of information.
In a specially convened meeting of all senior officials connected with law and order here, Mayawati took serious view of the rising crimes against women and issued strict directives for ensuring that FIRs related to crimes against women were lodged without any kind of delay.
“The police should not take more than 10 days to solve a case involving crime against women – irrespective of their class and community – and the guilty should be arrested within that period,” she said.
Referring to police officials involved in crimes, she said that if a police official was found conniving with the criminals and indulged in implicating the innocent, then he deserved to be suspended forthwith.
“Once the misdeed is proved, then such a policeman should not only be dismissed from the service but even sent to jail, if the law so provides.”
She further made it clear that the efficiency of police officials would be judged on the basis of crimes committed in their respective areas, particularly against women.
“Deputy superintendents of police under whose circles crime against women showed an upward trend, would be given adverse entries in their service records, their promotion would be put on hold and wherever needed, they would also be demoted,” she warned.
“Similar action would follow against superior officials including superintendents of police and deputy inspector generals of police in case of rise in crime against women in their respective jurisdictions,” she added.
