New Delhi: The ratio of girl child per thousand male child has witnessed a sharp decline in Indian villages in the last decade, according to the latest census data released Friday.
The child sex ratio in the rural areas has declined by 13 points from 927 in 2001, according to the data.
“In rural areas, the fall is significant (-15 points) from 934 in 2001 to 919 in 2011. In urban areas the decline is limited to four points from 906 in 2001 to 902 in 2011,” Registrar General and Census Commissioner C. Chandramauli told reporters.
He said the trend of declining ratio of girl child was “a cause of concern”.
Chandramauli said that the over sex ratio in the country has improved as the “visibility of women has increased both in rural and urban areas” of India.
“The sex ratio in the country has risen from 933 in 2001 to 940 in 2011. For rural areas in the country as a whole there has been an increase by only one point from 946 in 2001 to 947 in 2011. But in urban areas there has been an appreciable gain of 26 points from 900 in 2001 to 926 in 2011,” he said.
