Russian presidential polls March 4

By IANS/RIA Novosti,

Moscow : Russia’s presidential elections will be held March 4, 2012, a top official has said.

Central Election Committee member Maya Grishina made the announcement Thursday.

President Dmitry Medvedev said earlier that his running for presidency simultaneously with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in 2012 would be “counterproductive”. So only one of them would take part in the elections.

Neither Medvedev nor Putin have yet announced their decision to participate in the elections.

Sergei Mironov, former speaker of the Russian Federation Council, suggested that Putin and Medvedev had already agreed upon everything but will not make their decision public before the start of the election campaign, because if one if them is announced as a candidate, the other becomes a “lame duck”.
