Chinese officials meet Zardari on power project

By IANS,

Islamabad : A team of officials from China’s Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest hydropower project, has briefed President Asif Ali Zardari on a 120 MW project at Sukkur barrage.

Associated Press of Pakistan reported that a Chinese delegation headed by Wang Shaofeng, senior vice president of Three Gorges Corporation of China, met Zardari Friday.

President’s spokesperson Farhatullah Babar said the meeting was a follow-up to an earlier meeting in which Zardari had advised the government to task the Chinese corporation to build a run-of-the-river hydro project at Sukkur barrage.

Run-of-the-river is a type of hydroelectric generation in which either a smaller storage or none at all is used to supply water to a power station. The plant without water storage depends on seasonal river flows.

China has offered financial and technical assistance to develop hydro and wind power, up-grade the existing transmission system and provide an integrated solution to the problems of power shortages and disruptions in Pakistan.

The Three Gorges Corporation is involved in a number of multi-purpose hydro and wind power projects in the country including Karot, Taunsa, Kohala and Bunji hydro electric projects.
