New Delhi : In a bid to tighten the noose on tax evaders, the government is likely to engage outside agencies to locate the whereabouts of untraceable assessees and might put chronic defaulters’ names in public domain.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes has set up a committee under the chairmanship of Director General of Income Tax Anita Kapur to suggest modalities in this regard, an official statement said Wednesday.
One of the mandates of the committee is to “examine the possibilities of engaging outside agencies to locate the whereabouts of non-traceable assessees or their assets and also unknown/undisclosed assets owned by the assessees with inadequate assets vis-à-vis the outstanding demand”.
The committee, which will submit its report within two months, will also examine the feasibility and methodology of putting the names of chronic tax defaulters in public domain.
“In the current wave of transparency and anti-corruption drive, there is a demand to put the list of chronic defaulters in the public domain. This will also put the onus on the taxpayers to liquidate their demand,” the finance ministry statement said.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes also mulls a reward scheme for informants who provide information about such tax defaulters and which results into collection of the outstanding demand.
