Ranchi: Monsoon is likely to be delayed in Jharkhand by a week from its normal scheduled time of on-set, said an official of the Met department here Friday.

Earlier, monsoon was expected to reach Jharkhand on June 12.

“Monsoon was expected to arrive in Jharkhand by scheduled date of June 12. Now it could reach Jharkhand after June 15. There could be one week’s delay in arrival of monsoon,” said J.S. Jojo, director of the Jharkhand Meteorological Department.

“Monsoon has touched Bay of Bengal and costal parts of Orissa,” he told IANS.

Jharkhand farmers are eagerly waiting for its arrival.

The Met department officials have forecast normal rainfall for Jharkhand this year. It is a good news for the state, which has been suffering from drought last three years.

“We are ready for farming. We are happy with the predication that the state will get normal rainfall,” said Bikash Mahto, a farmer of Ranchi.

Jharkhand depends on rainfall for farming as it irrigates only 12 percent of the cultivable land through irrigation system against a national average of 40 per cent.
