Stand by Pakistan’s security forces: Malik tells countrymen

By IANS,

Islamabad : Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rehman Malik has urged the people not to criticise the military, and to stand by the country’s security forces.

“Blaming the security agencies without any evidence is unjustified as they are fighting for the survival of the country,” Malik was quoted as saying by the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP).

Malik said the government had formed a judicial commission to probe the killing of journalist Saleem Shahzad, because in a democracy “people’s demands are accepted”.

The interior minister said Shahzad’s killer would be apprehended.

He, however, said people should not “put pressure” on the supreme court on the issue.

“If we put all pressure on the Supreme Court it will be unfair to the people who are waiting for justice. Constitution of the commission is not a win-lose situation for any one,” he said.

On the killing of an unarmed youth in Karachi by paramilitary personnel, Malik said it would be “unfair to blame the whole Rangers for an individual’s action”.

Sarfaraz Shah was shot dead by personnel of the Sindh Rangers June 8 outside a Karachi park after he was allegedly caught snatching cash and valuables from visitors.

Footage released by news channels showed Shah was unarmed and was shot from a very close range. The video clips also reportedly showed he was pleading for mercy.
