Malappuram: Governor RS Gavai, who is also the Chancellor of the Calicut University, yesterday instructed to reinstate Dr PP Muhammed as the registrar of the university. Acting Vice-Chancellor Tom Jose ordered to reinstate him, as soon as the Chancellor’s decision came. And Mr Muhammed took charge in his office at around 6.30 pm.
The Governor took the decision as per the advice of the University Appellate Tribunal. Mr Muhammed was tried by the Tribunal chaired by district judge, which rejected all the allegations raised by the Syndicate for the dismissal. The Governor then ordered to give Dr Muhammed all the allowances due to him since his suspension.

The CPI (M)-headed Syndicate suspended Dr Muhammed on July 19, 2007, raising several allegations including misuse of power. He was accused of not providing the necessary aid for a research student suffering from cancer. The decision was taken as per the report of the single-member commission by Adv DK Babu, appointed by the Syndicate. Later Mr Muhammed was dismissed in August 2009, following his refusal to abide by the Syndicate direction of compulsory retirement.
Dr Muhammed was appointed the registrar of the Calicut University in 2003 when Dr Iqbal Hasnain was the vice-Chancellor, during the UDF government in the state. He was a lecturer in the Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, and came to Calicut University as a nominee of the Muslim League. His suspension and later dismissal by the Syndicate, led to several protest activities in the university campus.
However, the decision of the Governor has come after four years of legal battle by Mr Muhammed, who expressed pleasure in the reinstatement as well as having been able to prove his innocence.
