Ready to tackle water stagnation during rains: MCD

By IANS,

New Delhi: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Monday said it is ready to tackle water stagnation problems despite the monsoon arriving in the Capital three days earlier than the scheduled date of June 30.

A civic agency official said it was confident of completing desilting of all rain water drains by the month-end.

“We have drawn a monsoon contingency plan in which desilting is a major task. Last year, we faced problems due to excessive rains and lack of coordination with other agencies such as the Public Works Department, the Delhi Jal Board and Northern Railway,” said MCD spokesperson Deep Mathur.

“Much before the monsoon’s arrival this year, we conducted meetings with all the agencies for better coordination,” Mathur added.

Of the 1,524 drains listed for desilting, 498 projects were yet to be completed by the civic agency.

“Desilting of 535 drains has been done. The work of desilting the remaining drains will be completed by June 30,” Mathur said.

A round-the-clock centralised control room to tackle issues like clogging of drains and water stagnation has also been set up, he said.

The control room can be reached at 011-23212700, 011-23220010, 011-23220016 and 011-23220037.

“We also have control rooms in all the 12 zones of the MCD. If any person faces problems like water stagnation and clogged drains, he can call our helplines,” said MCD Standing Committee Chairman Yogender Chandolia.
