Trinamool ally SUCI-C opposes legislative council revival

By IANS,

Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress’ bid to revive the West Bengal Legislative Council has been opposed by its ally Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist), which feels it would only lead to wasteful expenditure.

The SUCI-C Monday submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee saying there was “absolutely no need” for the upper house that was abolished in 1969 by the United Front government of the time.

Party state secretary Soumen Basu said the upper house would lead to “wasteful expenditure” at a time the state was in “deep financial crisis”.

The three-member delegation also said that legislative councils now exist in only six of the 28 states.

The state government is slated to soon place a resolution in the assembly for reviving the upper house.
